What is the Price of a CCSL?
Many producers have no idea what the price of a CCSL is and that’s because they are either first time filmmakers, someone else has taken care of this for them in their production office or in-house or they have just ignored it because everything else comes before it in the filmmaking process. So, do you want to know what the price of a CCSL is? Sure, but It’s like asking this question:
What’s the Price of an Automobile?
How would you answer that question? “Yep Frank, it’s five-thousand dollars.” No, wait. What if they mean a car that’s not a 1972 Pontiac? “It’s ten-thousand dollars!” But wait. What if it’s NOT a 2015 VW? You get the picture. There are too many variations to this question. The same concept applies to CCSL’s and CCDL’s. We have prices ranging from $7.99/minute all the way up to $38.99/minute when you factor in what we call “footage and frames” something that a distributor will often request in their contracts with producers. And we have regular transcription services that go way under that lower price.
How Many Elements Do You Want Captured in your CCSL?
The three most basic of course are: Time code, Character/Speaker and of course Dialogue. And something this basic is usually referred to as a DIALOGUE LIST. When you call us please try to know if you want the following:
-SCENE DESCRIPTION: PAUL moves through the kitchen to greet SALLY with a cake and a baton.
-MUSIC CUES: “MUSIC starts here. MUSIC ends here. OPENING THEME begins here.
-CAMERA DESCRIPTION: CAMERA TILTS up. CAMERA PANS right.
Do you want SUBTITLES included? VO/OS? Footage count and frames per-reel?
All of these things factor into price on your combined continuity and spotting list quote.
CCSL Rates and Deadlines are Tied Together.
The biggest factor in price is TIME. Usually we ask for 2-3 weeks or 10-16 business days but we can do it faster and yes we’re also happy to do it slower.
Editing Style Also Factors in Continuity Cost.
We once quoted a film over the phone when we were told it was pretty much just one location with '“people talking” only to discover that it was eight Russian scientists at JPL all discussing particle physics and why the planet of the apes is unlikely to be found in reality short of the speed of light and it was fascinating and the director and editor made a cut every .004 seconds which meant a new time code stamp every single time and they needed it yesterday and our time machine doesn’t go back that far.
